Last Saturday in July 2011

It's the last Saturday in July 2011... Time flies when you're having fun. And summer vacation provides many opportunities for fun. This is another day where I have no plans... But will let the day unfold on it's own...

Supposed to be hot but with very low humidity. The TV weather person yesterday remarked the next two days will feel like a sauna... The following two days like a steambath... Temps are expected to be in the 90's for all but the humidity will gradually increase...

Was glad to read the upbeat piece in New York Magazine about the resurgence of the New York Times business model. I am not as optimistic about the success rate of their electronic subscription models which are off to a better than expected launch... Am hopeful. But remain unconvinced that it's all good news for old fashioned American journalism...

At Starbucks at 6am... Listening to some folksy music they have piped in and sipping my iced venti half caff...

Just tried to post from the new Android Blogger app. It was already a draft and unfortunately it published with the date that it was initially conceived instead of today... which is what I wanted. Couldn't find that setting anywhere... I'll have to fix it when I get to the desktop...

Also in New York Magazine this week was a simple and important piece on the sad regentrification of a favorite Upper West Side block on Broadway... It's a telling piece on a very serious trend that promises to destroy the entire fabric of so many New York City neighborhoods...

Bigger is rarely better around here...

OK... I want to test this Android app... So will publish now and hyperlink later...
Have a good Saturday, everyone! Whether you are in a sauna, steamroom, a fridge or a freezer... (I know I would prefer the latter for myself)....
Cheers.

Pondering the New York Times

Flying off to work... But a coupla thoughts after reading today's New York Times...

I know that newspapers are struggling... But...

So sorry to see that today is Clyde Haberman's final NYC column in the New York Times!... What are they thinking??? I hope Haberman finds a new venue for his unique voice...

Reminds me that I still miss the fun and quirky New Yorky posts of Jennifer 8 Lee... Another dismissee many moons ago...

The Times also lost the legendary Frank Rich recently.

I applaud the rave review for Anything Goes' Sutton Foster by Ben Brantley in today's Times.

The NYTimes coverage of Michael Bloomberg's Cathie Black debacle is exceptionally well covered in today's paper...

Just pondering...

Congratulations to Joe.My.God

Congratulations to longtime fellow NYC blogger buddy Joe.My.God on receiving the first ever GLAAD media award for Outstanding Blog...

This is GLAAD's first ever blogging award...

Much deserved, Joe!

A-O-Hell!!!

AOL is buying Huffington Post??

Seven ways meditation can save your life...  is just the kind of Huffington Post article that will fit nicely on an AOL welcome page...

How Al Gore wooed Keith Olbermann to Current TV is exactly the kind of article that Huffington Post will not be able to merge with AOL... Though this particular article happens to be a very excellent idea of an appropriate media merger...

This AOL/HuffPo combo idea is stupid!! And it will tank...!

You can mark my words...

F-F-Frigid S-S-Saturday

Yesterday was snowy and tepid by late afternoon. Today is bone chillingly frigid. And why not? I love it...

Was to a local Greek diner, read and recycled the weekend New York Times, sorted the mail, and hit the grocery store by 8am on this Saturday AM... Funny how I instinctively awaken at the stroke of 6am, even without the alarm set...

Glad to see that the Park Life gallery is putting up a fight against Jeff Koons attempt to hijack the balloon dog as a personal copyright... If anyone should own it, I think it belongs to Chuckles the Clown... So Koons can start writing his checks to the widow Lady Donothing at once...

Time for collecting and gathering tax documents and putting them in a separate envelope for the tax guy. A seasonal ritual, right on schedule.

So Keith Olbermann quit Countdown and MSNBC last night? I can't say I'm surprised, really. He's been pissed for a while. Or maybe Olbermann was fired? No surprise either as MSNBC was pissed for a while.

But really?? Lawrence O'Donnell's dry and less "in your face" style on The Last Word is prolly better for these times anyway. And I won't miss that horrible sophomoric Oddball segment where Keith always delighted in showing footage of confused deer in grocery stores, or other poor confused wildlife... I fast forwarded through it regularly... And I never did share his weekly affection for James Thurber.... But ahhhh, those Special Comments of Keith's. They were oft brilliant tidbits of rhetorical genius. His view and voice will be missed. Although I'm confident he will soon find a new outlet... I'll keep an eye on his Twitter page...

Had a visitor last night that ooooo-ed and ahhhh-ed at my two computer screen set-up on my desktop... I can't imagine why everyone doesn't have this... I really don't... It makes everything from monitoring social networking to editing tasks and other publishing tasks a snap!

Almost time to call the parents for the regularly scheduled (at least) weekly chat. I thank God daily for their continued good health and independence...

Stay warm...
