Saw the Veendam docked here in Manhattan today. I headlined on it's inaugural cruise in 1996. Gad. A lifetime and a lifestyle ago.

Saturday was pretty much a stay-in-all-day kinda day. I slept way too much. Sunday was pretty much a stay-outside-and-enjoy-the-day kind of day. I'll probably still sleep too much. Beautiful cool weather for both!

Most of us are comfortable where we are even though the whole universe is constantly changing around us. Learning to accept this is vital to our happiness and general success. Because only when we change, do we grow, and begin to see a world we never knew was possible... And don’t forget, however good or bad a situation is now, it will change. That’s the one thing you can count on. So embrace it, and realize that change happens for a reason. It won’t always be easy or obvious at first, but in the end it will be worth it.

Find Me On Pictify

I was sent an invite to join Pictify a few days ago. At first I was a little sceptical as every other day there seems to be another new social network/online art image bank popping up but I must admit that after an initial browse of the site, I've become somewhat addicted. Every few seconds members of the site are uploading new images (both of well-known and not so well-known artworks) so there's always something to hold your attention.

This is my Pictify page. Most of the artwork on it can also be found on my Flickr page but I dare say that unless I loose interest, I'll be adding lots more images to the Pictify site in the next few days. If you would care to see what images I've posted then please feel free to visit the site and if you would be so kind as to 'like' any of my images then you would make me a very happy bunny. Cheers!

This is what the internet looks like. Like an episode of that old TV show Reboot apparently.

Nerds, let's get it together - Lords of Waterdeep Inevitable Betrayal Promo Card

So there's this game, Lords of Waterdeep. Good game. And in this game, there's a common deck of cards that you use to affect your opponents. There was recently an auction for a promo card that cost this much
So here someone's paying $33.36 for an single card that will go into a deck of 60ish other cards and in barely have any effect. And this isn't a buy-it-now listing: this is an actual auction and someone bid that amount. $33.36, by the way, is more than the game itself costs. But because this one card is so hard to get, people will pay crazy amounts to get it/ --------
Also, the game has a really cool box. It's really well designed. But it's not this cool.
Also, why are you chopping down trees while you open up games. -------- Previous post on a similar topic: Dixit Promo, Arkham Horror Expansion

Tony de Mare Triumphs With Sondheim Re-Works

Caught the NYC Premiere last evening of the amazing Anthony de Mare's Liaison's: Re-Imagining Sondheim last night at Symphony Space.

Seventeen of today's leading jazz, classical, music theater, pop, and film composers - including Fred Hersch, Steve Reich, Ricky Ian Gordon, Gabriel Kahane, and Daniel Bernard Roumain, - came together to re-imagine their best loved Sondheim songs as solo piano works in their own distinctive and eclectic styles.

For this evening of New York premieres, Stephen Sondheim himself took to stage, interviewed by Mark Eden Horowitz, author of the acclaimed book Sondheim on Music. Sondheim gave his humbled blessing to the entire project.

This project has looooong legs.

Watch for it...

Note: I last wrote about Tony de Mare at Carnegie Hall in 2005.

Rest In Peace: Jonathan Frid

Rest in Peace Jonathan Frid, 1924-2012.

Born: John Herbert Frid; Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; December 2, 1924. He passed away of natural causes at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, on Friday the 13th — less than a month before Johnny Depp's highly anticipated big-screen re-creation of the Barnabas Collins role in a new Tim Burton version of Dark Shadows.

Long live the original Barnabas Collins...!

I was a HUGE fan of the original Dark Shadows soap in the 1970's and saw him in virtually all of his 594 episodes.

I saw star in Arsenic and Old Lace on Broadway in 1986/87. And last saw a glimpse of him onstage at the Dark Shadow's Convention in New York City last summer...

Chattering Final Sunday of Spring Break 2012

"Things don't spiral out of control when we surrender them; they spiral out of control when we try to control them!" - Marianne Williamson said that on Facebook this week.

Had a great day Saturday, yesterday, taking Robert M around the MoMA Cindy Sherman exhibit... Once you "get" what she's doing here... You see the brilliance...

It was my second visit. MoMA membership has it's privileges like early Member Preview hours, and cheap guests... 004

Then, when strolling toward and around Central Park afterward we started spotting them... Cindy Shermans were everywhere...

Gonna be 85 degrees tomorrow. Just in time to schlep around for work... This does *not* please me. Break out the baby powder...

10 and a half loooong weeks til the next break. Ugh!

Bought a barely used A/C over the weekend... So looks like I got it installed just in time before tomorrow's expected record breaking heat...

I just noticed it's one of those "always on" devices... damn. I'll plug it into a zip strip with an on/off switch... That'll keep it from draining power when not in use. Truth is, I should do that with ALL the "always on" things around here.

Taxes aren't due til April 17th this year. Mine are all ready, I just need to electronically submit the damned things... Which is quite a maneuver requiring printers and faxes or scanners. When will they perfect the "digital signature"?

"I bet there was a week where William Wegman considered cats" sez clever Nick Amadeus on his Twitter! 011

Here's my own Twitter, BTW.

Yesterday in Greenwich Village, I pinpointed the exact location of the former International Stud gay bar immortalized and depicted in Torch Song Trilogy. It was on the NE corner of Greenwich and Perry. Later, it was a restaurant called Caribe. Currently, it's a different restaurant...

A recent Dr. Oz guest said coffee with paper filters is best cuz it gets out cholesterol causing compound... I really should get myself a damned coffee maker... Finally! Make a big pot and then fridge the rest for iced coffee too. OK... I'll get it this week! Paper filters too!

I can't live without Swiffer cloths.

Winding Down Spring Break 2012

Friday the 13th. I always kinda like when that happens. Something sexy about it... Must be my vampire roots...

45°F now. Going up to 66°F, they say. All good, I say.

As usual, though, I can't quite fathom that a Spring Break has once again completely whooshed by to its final Friday...

Twas a great week though... Truly.

Discovered a nice Public Atrium at Onassis Cultural Center, NY yesterday.. 52nd/53rd. Meeting a friend on the east Side provided new New York sights. That's how NYC is. Why people that live here think they want to take a vacation elsewhere is beyond me.

Today? Meeting ol pal Rawss at Time Square's Caffe Bene . Catching up with friends old and new during a Spring Break is one of my favorite vacation activities...

And I'll make it a great weekend to boot...

My Remember The Milk subscription expires on Monday. I prefer paper and pen for some tasks. Just my nature. Though it's a great app and service if you are a computer based person...

Last night,  took a friend to see a friend in a Nursing Home and then walked myself all the way home from waaaay Upper East Side. Stopped at a couple lil bistros for a club soda. One , I'd never been to before and always wondered about.... No need to EVER go there again... I can tell you that! LOL.

Happy 80th Birthday to Joel Grey... Here's a clip of him as a "kid" being introduced by Eddie Cantor on TV in 1954...I idolized him while in high school. Actually my first ever theatrical published review mentioned him in a comparison. Met him a few years later and told him. Damn if he wasn't one smug, prickly, bastard. I do wish him well on his 80th...

La Traviata in a Nutshell

Here's La Traviata in  nutshell.

It was good.

I'd never seen the actual caption thing (on the seat in front) though many people had tried to explain it to me over the years... Quite excellent the way it works w/o glare or distraction from your neighbor's caption screen....

It is always nice to realize that you are, essentially, still the youngest person in the room...

Beautifully sung... Even I knew it was good opera voice when it was good.... Soprano Natalie Dessay was brilliant.

Dad character actor was waay hunky hot, as I had been warned. Kudos to Dimitri Horovskorsky.

Seats were fabulous... Row K, 13&15... And comfortable and roomy enough for long legs... And my date Sue's short legs, of course.

Too bad there weren't more great sets to see up close for $200+ per seat (Free thanks to Danny)..... One would expect...

But not complaining... it was well staged and design aesthetic was good....

Fun little treat....

Though "little treat" doesn't really align with the magnificent Met Opera legacy...

So that's my La Traviata in a nutshell... Only wish it didn't fit in a nutshell...

There Are Movie Shows Downtown

Petula Clark, Downtown, 1965

'21 Steps' exhibition ( Liverpool)

Tomorrow morning I'm getting up bright and early and heading off to Liverpool. It's probably been a good twenty years since I last visited this lively city so when David Crawley, the director of Up And Coming Arts, asked me if I'd like to exhibit in his new exhibition I jumped at the chance. The show is called '21 Steps' and one of it's main sponsors is Liverpool Football Club.
Unfortunately I have to head back to London the same day so I won't be able to enjoy the musicians, bands and DJs that have signed up for Friday's opening party but if you are in the area and want to see what's going on then feel free to check out the Up And Coming Arts blog for all the details.

My contribution to the exhibition (which takes place over two venues) will be these three works – a painting, a pencil drawing and a print.

The painting is called 'The Ambassadors' and takes its figurative element from a photograph that appeared in many of the British tabloids a few years back. It shows a fight between some English and Turkish 'football fans'.
Like many of the paintings that I made at the time that I painted this one, it is painted on a shallow box structure that I constructed and the lines sheer off over the edge. The white line of the drawing is actually the primed surface showing through, so when you view the piece in the flesh, so to speak, your eye fluctuates slightly between the painted surface and the line drawing below. This can give the impression (from a certain distance) that the line of the drawing vibrates slightly.

I'm quite pleased with the pencil drawing but unfortunately the picture here doesn't do it justice – something that can be put down to my limited technical skills in the photographic department. The sketch is of a selection of found objects that I had lying around in my old studio but which I decided to draw as if they had mutated slightly and then morphed into one another. I think that it must have been one of those slow days, sculpturally, when I didn't have any big projects on the go and just decided to mess about a bit.

And lastly but hopefully not least, there's my Spidey Pods screen prints which will be on sale at the exhibition for £167 each. However, if you can't make it to Liverpool for the show but would like to purchase a print direct for me then please feel to drop me a line at waynechisnall@yahoo.co.uk .

Kid builds his own arcade out of cardboard and goes behind each game to hand out tickets

I'm just going to share this before I see this on every single other site I follow. See Caine's Arcade for yourself here:

http://feeds.boingboing.net/~r/boingboing/iBag/~3/98FS4Y74_Nw/9-year-olds-diy-cardboard-ar.html

Here's a quote:
"One day, by chance, I walked into Smart Parts Auto looking for a used door handle for my ’96 Corolla. What I found was an elaborate handmade cardboard arcade manned by a young boy who asked if I would like to play. I asked Caine how it worked and he told me that for $1 I could get two turns, or for $2 I could get a Fun Pass with 500 turns. I got the Fun Pass."

Staycation Tuesday Reflections

"New Yorkers are born all over the country, and then they come to New York City and it hits them: Oh, that’s who I am." - Delia Ephron, said that.

Just noticed that yesterday's pic from Blogger app on Android was the wrong picture. I just fixed it a day late!... Yikes. Better get in the habit of double checking those kinds of posts in preview mode... Lord knows what I might publish by mistake!! Horrifying!

010Yesterday was one of those great Staycation days ... Wandered around Greenwich Village... Including paying respects at the sites of the International Stud and the home of a famous puppeteer Rod Young... at 93 Perry Street. Visited a friend's new flat farther East on Perry Street... 300 square feet for $2400 a month. Oh Dear...

Wandered some more...

Stopped for a nice House Blend drip coffee at Roasting Plant table top.

Soon after getting a Calendar of Events at The Center... Lunch at Benny's Burritos... Last time I ate there... My present waiter hadn't been born yet... Sign of age and wisdom: I ordered a mini burrito and a salad... That was more than enough...020

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any.” - Alice Walker, said that.

Browsed Mxyplyzyk. Sat out in the sun in a couple of Village area parks down there: Abbingdon Square and Jackson Square...

Had a another quickie meet with a new friend in Chelsea...

Walking back down his West 18th Street I stumbled upon a Chelsea branch of one of my favorite restaurants, Westville... Was craving their rhubarb pie, but not in season yet... So had a Mixed Berry cobbler and coffee instead...

007

Rest in Peace, Mike Wallace. I last saw him at opening night of Inherit the Wind in 2007. For a journalist, he seemed to very much enjoy the show biz spotlight... Posing for the Paparazzi. He looked more Oprah than Morley... He was a great, great journalist though!

By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher. - Socrates, said that.

Wanted posters for Wonderwoman are appearing on light poles all over Hell's Kitchen. I wonder what Wondermann thinks about this...

Beautiful Easter Monday Stroll

Greetings from Abingdon Square.

...Where the tulips are in full bloom.

I'm off to see a friend's new apartment on Perry Street.

Meantime... Winding through the historic Greenwich Village streets.

Cool. Clear. Perfect.

I love Spring Break!

Easter Supper 2012

I've never been big on lamb...

Whitney Museum: Biennial 2012

Went to the Whitney's Biennial 2012. Some might call this a Hodge-Podge as sculpture, painting, installations, and photography (as well as dance, theater, music, and film) fill the entire Whitney Museum of American Art in the 2012 edition of the Whitney Biennial.

 I call it a mess.

The 2012 Biennial takes over most of the Whitney from March 1 through May 27, with portions of the exhibition and some programs continuing through June 10. The 2012 Biennial is in constant flux, with artists, works, and experiences varying over the course of the exhibition.

So it's an ever-changing mess.

The participating artists were selected by Elisabeth Sussman, Sondra Gilman and Jay Sanders, a freelance curator and writer who has spent the past decade in the gallery world as well as on independent curatorial projects.

... All three should be ashamed of themselves.

If you want to read more about the Whitney Biennial 2012. Though I don't know why you would.
