Tony de Mare Triumphs With Sondheim Re-Works
Caught the NYC Premiere last evening of the amazing Anthony de Mare's Liaison's: Re-Imagining Sondheim last night at Symphony Space.
Seventeen of today's leading jazz, classical, music theater, pop, and film composers - including Fred Hersch, Steve Reich, Ricky Ian Gordon, Gabriel Kahane, and Daniel Bernard Roumain, - came together to re-imagine their best loved Sondheim songs as solo piano works in their own distinctive and eclectic styles.
For this evening of New York premieres, Stephen Sondheim himself took to stage, interviewed by Mark Eden Horowitz, author of the acclaimed book Sondheim on Music. Sondheim gave his humbled blessing to the entire project.
This project has looooong legs.
Watch for it...
Note: I last wrote about Tony de Mare at Carnegie Hall in 2005.
