He was a MAJOR pop icon in his day for kids my age...

Not A Day Goes By
Happy Birthday, Bernadette Peters...!
Not a Day Goes By, by Stephen Sondheim from Merrily We Roll Along sung by Bernadette Peters.
Lonely Narcissism Skewered By Cindy Sherman
Sherman is considered one of the greatest Modern artists of the last 40 years... Essentially, she makes self portraits in various characterizations that make statements about feminism, aging, sexuality, pornography, youth, aristocracy, pop culture and lonely Narcissism.
The New York Times review of Cindy Sherman informs: "she is famous for working solo in her studio, without assistants. Part of the power of her images is their home-alone quality. We know that everything we see in a Sherman image she put there, deliberately, decisively."
MoMA's Cindy Sherman is great fun...
A great deal of it is the big gaudy colorful stuff...
I found the smaller early works the most fascinating and insighful to what made the artist tick...

The Last Sunday of the Midwinter Break 2012
My Internet was down this morning.... So I was stuck to Smartphone only for a while... Kind of claustrophobic....
I always DVR the Oscars and go to bed... Especially tonight cuz I have to be well rested and psyched to start the next six week stretch (with nary a Monday holiday or nothin) til Spring Break...
I also then DVR Fashion Police on E! the next night cuz I love to watch Joan Rivers rip the linings and pull out the stitching of the celebrity wardrobe to shreds!
Ack! It's lunchtime already??? Time for Burrito Box
Have a great Sunday!
OMGIF
Oh My God, It's Friday... Another vacation week flew by (complete contrast to the other ones that draaaag til Friday)
My local Starbucks is clean, nice and efficient... But somebody has to teach these Baristas how to be warm and friendly... Do they have a training manual for that? They need one, apparently.
To the toe tapping, head shaking, sighing man sitting nearby "Which part of the term 'Waiting Room' do you not understand?"
To the nurse who wouldn't let me change the Date of Birth in my folder to ten year's younger: "Yer a bitch!"
Had a nice coffee meet catch up at NewsBar on University with Pablo... Shared a slice of a decent chocolate pound cake.
Salmon Teriyaki Box at the Japanese down the street... "East Japanese". Good food. Good prices. Dumb name.
On the DVR: NYInk, Joan and Melissa, Work of Art, Oddities, Lawrence Welk Show, and The Wizard of Oz in HD
Yesterday was another full day in staycation paradise. W/ Mr. Nick to Eataly & Chock Full O Nuts. Later at Paramount Hotel for a spell to meet friends nearby.

It's been damned sixty degrees. This is late February in NYC, people.
Starbucks tells me they are sending me a Gold Card because I drank 30 cups of coffee since New Years. Actually, 60 cuz refills are free. Venti, as in huge. I already feel like a big shot and I don't have the card yet.
I cleaned off my desk. I cleaned off my desk. I CLEANED OFF MY DESK!
Took a morning off to hang out in Central Park. And w/o a coat. Had already hit Cindy Sherman, Mark Podwal exhibit at Forum Gallery, & Plaza Hotel for a spell.

Explain to me how these are related (part 2)
Karen and I just got Netflix to save money (do you realize cable basically costs $2.40/day and Netflix is $8/month?). When you first sign up you do this thing where you rate stuff you have seen and then it starts recommending stuff to you. It did a really good job suggesting movies and shows for us even though our 5 star ratings range from Battlestar Galactica to Gilmore Girls.
It also recommended a bunch of anime so I figured I would find one to give a shot. I've never really watched anime (other than Pokemon / Digimon) and so I asked Jake what a good one to try out would be. On his recommendation, I am watching Death Note. I'm 11 episodes in and so far it's really good: plot driven with plenty of cliffhangers. It looks like this.
And see where it has the 4 red stars? That means "Netflix thinks that if you watched this, you would rate it 4 stars"

Affected by the Effects
Great article on Alcoholism in The New York Times the other day...
Drinking and Drugging by Frank Bruni...
According to Robert Brewer, the alcohol program leader at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, heavy drinking is the third leading preventable cause of death in this country, after smoking and a combination of bad diet and inactivity. By conservative estimates, it’s directly related to about 80,000 deaths each year, an agent of — or co-conspirator in — cirrhosis, esophageal cancer, overdose, homicide and much, much more. It seeds and squires a broad range of diseases. Multiplies the effects of illicit and prescription drugs. Adds the twitch to a trigger finger. Puts the wobble in legs on a staircase or hands on a steering wheel.
And while 8 percent of Americans ages 12 and over use illicit drugs, 34 percent are addicted to alcohol or indulge in what public health officials consider risky drinking, according to Susan E. Foster, director of policy research and analysis for the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.
We're all affected by the effects... Just walking down the street...
PERSONA 4 ARENA NOW UP FOR PRE-ORDER
Chronicle: Testosterone Telekinesis
Well acted by Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Kelly, and Alex Russell.
, nicely directed by Josh Trank... Sort of outrageous story line... But, hey...
Kind of a Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity sort of amateur hand held reality show feel to it... But better photography. Cinematography by Matthew Jenson.
This is a teenaged boy's version of I Dream of Jeanne or Bewitched...
My synopsis?: Mischievous youths come-of-age while mastering accidental tele-kinetic powers from some asteroid in a cave or something... Oh, yeah, they can fly, too... Kewl!
It's not The Catcher in the Rye... But , it has it's moments... Actually a lot of moments... Certainly enough to hold attention for the duration... (83 Minutes)
I found it FUN. But I like this sort of thing. Always have.
Here's the Wikipedia entry on Chronicle.
Here's the HD Trailer for Chronicle
Here's the New York Times review for Chronicle.
Hey Odd Friend!
You can thank digital technology for sharp hi-def Photo-shopped images and news reel type feeds to keep the audience on track to the otherwise bizarre retro-timeline... (An old fashioned slide show projection or rear screen projection in it's day would have lacked the punch...)
My favorite line from the script: "When the hell am I going to get a waiter that's just a waiter" declares a millionaire after he was on the receiving end of a pitch for a new fangled invention called a phone answering machine by a moonlighting young inventor...
"Hey Old Friend" is one of Stephen Sondheim's most easily sung ditties, and "Not a Day Goes By", one of his most lovely ballads...
But otherwise, the score lacks luster and... As my friend BMB pointed out... "the conceit that writing musicals is the highest form of artistic endeavor is, well, a little conceited".
The gentleman seated to my left had seen the original production... He said the beginning of the original show showed the main characters as 1957 high school kids and that then the audience, at least, had a chance to "like em" and "identify with" them.... But going backwards like this, from the end of their bitter show biz careers.... They were all too unlikeable from the get go...
So, this guy pointed out that the audience isn't engaged because we don't care for these guys.... He also seemed to recall there was a different opening number "The Hills of Tomorrow".... But that it was obviously cut from this production...
All said and done? I'm glad I went. It was like a textbook viewing of an era and a peek into Sondheim's world, circa 1981...
Many of Sondheim's works became butterflies... But this one? Even with the improvements, remains more of an odd moth that flutters sideways and never makes it fully into the spotlight.
Notes: Brilliant cast featured Colin Donnell, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Elizabeth Stanley, Betsy Wolfe and Adam Grupper. Merrily We Roll Along, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth, directed by James Lapine, with excellent music direction by Rob Berman and clever musical staging by Dan Knechtges. Merrily was extended for a two-week run and played for 15 performances, February 8-19, 2012, 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Print/Out at MoMA
Print/Out
February 19–May 14, 2012
At MoMA.
This exhibition examines the evolution of artistic practices related to the print medium, from the resurgence of traditional printmaking techniques—often used alongside digital technologies—to the proliferation of self-published artists’ projects.
... Examines the many roles that prints play in artistic practices today, embracing the versatile and global nature of contemporary art in the last two decades. On view from February 19 to May 14, 2012, in The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art Exhibition Gallery, Print/Out brings together approximately 70 series or projects drawn from MoMA's extensive collection of more than 50,000 prints and illustrated books, while also including several important loans from private and public collections.
Print/Out is part of a series of large-scale print surveys periodically organized by the Museum's Department of Prints and Illustrated Books in order to assess the current state of the medium. The last two exhibitions were Printed Art: A View of Two Decades, organized by Riva Castleman in 1980, and Thinking Print: Books to Billboards: 1980-1995, organized by Deborah Wye in 1996. Part of Print/Out takes place on the Museum's second floor with the exhibition Printin', co-organized by the artist Ellen Gallagher and Associate Curator Sarah Suzuki, and centered around Gallagher's major portfolio DeLuxe (2004-05). The Museum is also hosting Print Studio, an interactive space that explores the evolution of artistic practices relating to the medium of print. -- Dexigner
Print/Out review by Ken Johnson in The New York Times: "Abounding in blatant verbiage, it has a hectoring, noisy feeling, as if you were being yelled at for the duration of your visit".

I saw The Artist weeks ago at The Paris Theatre over by The Plaza Hotel...
I adored it...
Now that it's gotten all kinds of Oscar attention, you may already have heard how good it is...
Don't miss it...

Stone Totem Tower
Most hoarders justify their activities with phrases like 'but I'll definitely use it' or 'as soon as I throw it away you just know that I'll need it the next day'. And it's true – I do use a lot of the stuff I collect but some individual items have been known to sit around for decades before they graduate to the 'status' of art material. One such item is a pebble which I've just used in a mini sculpture and belated birthday present for fellow artist Remi Rough.
I like the idea of taking everyday bits of rubbish or found objects, removing them from their original environments and displaying them in a way that elevates them (in this piece, literally) to something akin to that of an artefact. This is more evident in my earlier sculpture, The City, which with its multiple glass fronted boxes looks more like a mobile Cabinets of Curiosity.
But getting back to the pebble - I was trying to remember where I originally picked it up and how long I've had it for. Although all I could recall was that it's been sitting on my book shelf for as long as I can remember and has travelled with me as I moved home for at least the last twelve moves. Then I came across this, one of my earliest prints made some time in the early 90's and realised that it was the same pebble.

Hugo Missed The Mark
Loved it's 1930's style. Many of it's visuals were rich and gorgeous.
Respected that it didn't over do the 3D stuff... (Though I still find the 3D glasses somewhat uncomfortable and restrictive).
Respectable.
But: Waaaaay tooooo looooong! (And therefore self indulgent).
Been a few weeks, and there's nothing about it that sticks with me...
As a friend remarked, "It could have been really great". So, we were in agreement that it was lacking... Something.
Lacking what? Plot, mostly. Or something.
Just left kind of disappointed...
It missed it's mark.
