Some people are completely shocked that Borders is closing so many stores... Frankly, I don't know how brick and mortar book stores have survived as long as they have. The B&N at 82nd and Broadway is filled with UWS mothers and nannies reading books on the floor of the Children's Department... They put the slobbered on books right back on the shelf and wheel their strollers to the exit without getting anywhere near a cash register... Perhaps, these places should charge an admission charge??? Seriously! Borders' Park Avenue store is having a fire sales starting today...
I'll get over to The Petition Site this week and sign a slew... Like get everyone talking about climate change. I keep a separate email account on Care2.com just for activism. That way all that mail goes there and I check it every once in a while. I can be active without having my in-box jammed. I have found all these legitimate activist organizations are perfectly respectful of your email preferences. You just need to be careful when you sign petitions to un-check the block that you want to get their mailings. You can also opt to be Anonymous... Which makes your petitions unsearchable on the Internet.
Homeless guy on the corner. People give him money. Today, I see him sipping from a liquor bottle in the phone booth. Sad. But, personally, I refuse to subsidize his liquor addiction. I just won't. When I see a new homeless person hanging around in the neighborhood, I often stop and tell them the local churches and centers around where they can go for free breakfasts and lunches... That's more my style. And sometimes I give them food...
... Just like those old fashioned Wilbur Buds from Wilbur's Chocolatiers... Today, the only Bud prominent in American pop culture is the beer... Not sure which Bud would be more addictive or would make you fatter...
